Mental calculator

The renowned mathematician Thomas Fuller, dubbed the “Mental Calculator,” passed away on December 29, 1790.

Thomas Fuller, an African slave who passed away on December 29, 1790, was well-known for his mathematical prowess. At the age of 14, he was kidnapped in Africa by European slave traders and transported to the United States in 1724.

His mathematical prowess allowed him to perform amazing computations. When they asked him once how many seconds there were in a year and a half, he replied, “47304000,” in about two minutes. His brilliance was exploited by pro-abolitionists and white philanthropists as evidence that Black slaves were just as intelligent as White people.

Sadly, Thomas Fuller’s remarkable mathematical contributions have been lost to history.

This December 29th is a special day.
