Lions Acquire Kyle Peko, DT

Over the years, Kyle Peko has moved between a few teams and on and off practice squads, making his way through the transaction posts on this site. Though largely used as a backup, the seasoned defensive tackle has managed to draw attention.

For the eight-year veteran, a spell with the Titans last season opened up new territory—a regular starting run—and it appears that experience will lead to another position. Peko joined the Lions on Tuesday, paving the way for a reunion with C.J. Moore.

Peko’s next stop after entering the NFL as a UDFA in 2016 will be Detroit. Between 2016 and 22, the former signee of the Broncos made a total of three starts. He started 10 games for the Titans in the previous campaign. Peko returned to the Tennessee D-line last year; he has made three earlier starts in his career with the 2021 Titans. He swatted down a pass and made 22 tackles, including two for loss.

Peko, 30, was ranked as a bottom-10 performer among D-tackle regulars by Pro Football Focus, an advanced metrics website that did not consider him to be a productive defender. Terrell Williams, a former Mike Vrabel assistant, was hired by the Lions to serve as both their defensive run-game coordinator and D-line coach. Being familiar with Williams—the former home of the Titans—will undoubtedly help Peko get another chance.

Kyle is a former player for the Broncos, Bills, Colts, Raiders, and Titans. His cousin is the longtime NFL defensive end Domata Peko. The Oregon State alum’s career-high total of 13 games played was also reached last season. He becomes the newest member of the interior D-line group for the Lions, which also includes sixth-round rookie Mekhi Wingo, 14-year veteran Tyson Alualu, past Day 2 choices Levi Onwuzurike and Brodric Martin, free agency addition D.J. Reader, and Alim McNeill.
