Kristaps Porzingis Regarding The Cheers He Got From Celtics Supporters Prior To Game 1: “Like A WWE-Style Walk-In”

The Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks squared off in Game 1 of the 2024 NBA Finals, where Kristaps Porzingis made his eagerly anticipated comeback from injury. Prior to Game 2, Porzingis was being greeted by raucous cheers by the Celtics supporters as he made his way to the court. The Latvian then talked about the experience. It was completely crazy. I won’t lie,” declared Porzingis. “Even just entering the tunnel felt a bit like a walk-in from WWE.” At first, I had no idea it was for me. As I was leaving, I could feel the energy of the crowd growing and was eager to start the game and give it my all for the supporters who had come.

That certainly resembled what we have seen throughout the years in the WWE. Neither did Porzingis disappoint those Celtics supporters. The 28-year-old finished with 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 21 minutes off the bench. With 11 points in the first quarter alone, Porzingis contributed to the Celtics’ decisive opening-quarter lead of 37–20. The advantage then grew to 29 at one point, and even though the Mavericks made a comeback in the third quarter, the Celtics were able to hold them at a distance and win 107-89. During these playoffs, there was a lot of discussion about how fortunate the Celtics were because their opponents’ stars missed time or were sidelined because of  injury. Jimmy Butler didn’t play at all in the first round for the Miami Heat while Donovan Mitchell and Tyrese Haliburton missed a couple of games in the second round and the Conference Finals respectively.

It appeared to be overlooked that Porzingis was also out due to an injury. Even while the former All-Star is undoubtedly not quite as talented as those three, he shown in Game 1 how significant he can be on the court. The Celtics are hoping Porzingis maintains this level of play for the remainder of the season.
