The other day, a recent ad brought back some wonderful memories. It advertised Vanson Leathers. Fall River, Massachusetts, a blue-collar city, is home to Vanson. Coincidentally, I purchased my first pair of race leathers there about 1981.

It was an all-black suit without any of the modern race suit features, such as airbags, speed bumps, lightweight goatskin or kangaroo leather, hydration, etc. My leather jackets were really hefty. Other than certain stretch panels and armor, they were essentially composed of cowskin. However, “back in the day,” they exuded a minimalist sense of coolness. Even though they appeared cool on the inside, they were hot, muggy, and sweaty. More than once, I needed assistance.
