Exclusive: M.J. Devonshire of the Raiders Discusses Areas for Improvement

M.J. Devonshire, the new cornerback for the Las Vegas Raiders, is already aware of the areas he needs to work on to advance to the next level of success.

Regardless of your line of work, if you already know what you need to do to improve, you’re already headed in the right direction.

M.J. Devonshire, a cornerback selected in the seventh round by the Las Vegas Raiders, is aware that he still has a ways to go before achieving success in the NFL, but he also knows what it will take to get there.

In an upcoming episode of the “Las Vegas Raiders Insider Podcast,” Devonshire shared with our Hondo S. Carpenter Sr. the things he needs to improve on to match the world’s finest players.

The next step, according to Devonshire, is “being more physical.”

“You just got to — in this league, it’s a step, and you’re playing with grown men, so now you got to turn your physicality up even more than where you were before,” he stated. And to be honest, it means everything to me. Getting stronger at anything every day, in my opinion, eventually stacks the bricks one by one—whatever that one special item is—day by day.

However, being physically active and undoubtedly honing my covering techniques rank first for me. Many may comment, “He’s great in coverage,” but there are still certain areas where you need to raise your game. Both the regulations and the recipients have changed. You have to be able to compete with the finest of the best because these are the greatest of the best. You can’t just walk in on Day 1 and start covering guys like Davante Adams. That is simply not how things operate.

You have to pick up knowledge, just like I had to from him and the individuals supporting me in order to become that in the NFL.”

The Raiders selected Devonshire in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft, thinking he was a steal. His demeanor, diligence, and aptitude all exemplify the Raider way, and his self-awareness only serves to heighten the appeal of his joining the Silver and Black.
