Jockey Tyler Gaffalione, who is just 27 years old, is well-known to race fans nationwide, particularly in Kentucky, where he won the eighth Churchill Downs leading rider championship of his brief career at the 2022 Spring Meet.

With 61 victories as of Monday’s final day, Gaffalione had 28 more than Ricardo Santana Jr.’s 33.

The native of Florida has a long history of horseback riding. Steve, his father, and Bobby, his grandfather, were jockeys. This spring, when Gaffalione rode White Abarrio in the $3 million Kentucky Derby (G1), his father was present at Churchill Downs.

Gaffalione won nine stakes races during the Spring, despite not being able to ride White Abarrio to victory in the “Run for the Roses.”
