Early WNBA performance by Caitlin Clark will serve as an audition for a position on the US Olympic team.

Before June 1st, the women’s roster for the Paris Games will not be announced.

Caitlin Clark will use her early WNBA performance as an audition to see if she can make the American women’s basketball team for the Olympics.

Before June 1st, the women’s roster for the Paris Games will not be announced. Clark will get the first opportunity in her WNBA career to prove to the U.S. women’s basketball selection committee that she is deserving of a spot on the squad. Clark was unable to attend the U.S. training camp this month.

Jennifer Rizzotti, chair of the selection committee, said she will be observing.

Whether it’s for the present or the future, you should always add new players to the pool, Rizzotti stated to The Associated Press. “Obviously, we adhere to our core values of skill, positional fit, commitment, and experience. It must be a synthesis of a whole body of work. Some people won’t be treated fairly, even now.

Although it took place during the Final Four, when Clark was still playing for a national championship with Iowa, she received an invitation to attend the U.S. training camp in Cleveland. While it wasn’t a must to join the squad, the NCAA Division I all-time scoring leader would have benefited from showing the selection committee that she could compete with some of the world’s greatest players. The United States held its final camp before revealing its roster in Cleveland.

Just before the Olympics in July, the team will spend a few days together in Phoenix, Arizona, where they will participate in an exhibition All-Star game against WNBA players.

Last week, the American men’s basketball team’s Olympic roster was revealed.

A strong group of guards is available for the American women in the pool as they attempt to win an Olympic gold medal for the eighth time in a row. Diana Taurasi, a five-time Olympian, Chelsea Gray, Ariel Atkins, and Jewell Loyd are among the players on the list; all three were members of the Tokyo Games squad in 2021. In the water with her are Olympic gold medallist Kelsey Plum and Sabrina Ionescu.

During last weekend’s 3×3 training camp, Rizzotti stated, “When Diana and Chelsea Gray’s careers are over, you want to make sure you’re in a position with these upcoming guards with Sabrina, Kelsey, and Caitlin that you feel good that our future is set.”

On May 14, when the No. 1 choice in the draft begins her WNBA career at the Connecticut Sun, Rizzotti will have a first-hand look at Clark. The Sun’s president is Rizzotti.

Clark wouldn’t be the first WNBA rookie to be on an Olympic team if she makes it. The last person to do so was Breanna Stewart, who joined the squad in 2016. The distinction was that Stewart had participated in the 2014 World Cup as a member of the national team since she was a sophomore in college.

Clark has played for junior USA teams, but she has no experience with the senior national team. She took home gold at the 2017 FIBA U16 Americas Championship, the 2019 and 2021 FIBA U19 World Cups.

According to some stories, Clark might have been a member of the 3×3 squad. Clark has stated that playing on the 5-on-5 team is her main priority.

Last week, Clark told the AP, “That’s where I want to be.” It’s incredibly fun to play three-on-three, but I’ve never done it. But the dream and the aim is 5-on-5. You can’t write a better script than that to play with and against the greatest players in the world.

The original version of this item said that Clark leads all NCAA Division I scorers in scoring history.
