After pulling ahead of Ryan Blaney on the last restart of the race on Sunday, Larson won the Brickyard 400 under caution. Before NASCAR eventually issued a caution for Ryan Preece’s stalled car on the backstretch, Larson was given the go-ahead.

On the penultimate lap, Preece spun off Turn 2 and collided with the inside wall; however, NASCAR failed to issue a flag for more than thirty seconds because Preece was unable to restart. According to NASCAR regulations, the race was declared ended when Larson raised the white flag to signal a caution. Another restart would have been required if the caution had been issued prior to Larson beginning his final lap.
