On Saturday night, on their opening series against Tampa Bay, the Bengals had a close look at Joe Burrow.
Burrow led a 73-yard drive, handed a touchdown pass to Tee Higgins, and then exited the field in his first game in over nine months.
Burrow demonstrated that he was ready to play, even though the Buccaneers prevailed 17–14 thanks to a late score.
He connected with four different receivers and completed five of seven passes for 51 yards and five first downs.
Bengals coach Zac Taylor stated, “I thought he was in control and saw the defense really well.” “Those guys made plays for him, and I thought he handled it really well.”
Higgins was one of the few Bengals starters that played, and he received both of Burrow’s first and last throws of the drive. Burrow found Higgins on a 9-yard pass to start the drive. Then, with Tampa Bay down 10, on second-and-goal, Burrow found Higgins again for a 5-yard touchdown after Higgins sidestepped a tackle from cornerback Josh Hayes.

After mending from surgery to repair a torn ligament in his pitching hand, Burrow appeared to be back to normal. On one play, he threw the ball away to evade a blitz, yet he still managed to avoid getting struck.
It was good to be back out there, but there is still work to be done, Burrow added. Got that touchdown, with a little assistance. It was a good beginning.
On November 16 versus Baltimore, Burrow was hurt while throwing a touchdown pass to Higgins as well.
Jake Browning, the backup, performed worse. He finished 10 of 18 passes for 52 yards while playing the remainder of the first and third quarters. The Bengals had a difficult game until late in the half, when rookie Jermaine Burton caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Logan Woodside, the team’s third quarterback of the evening.
Higgins also quit following the opening series. With a franchise tag, he is trying to establish himself for 2024.
