Cam Newton’s sour response to Kirk Cousins’ $180 million contract with the Falcons

When the Atlanta Falcons signed Kirk Cousins to a $180 million contract, it was a crucial NFL free agency move. As a veteran quarterback, Cousins should help Atlanta advance. Still, some viewed the team’s move with mistrust. Cam Newton, a former quarterback, provided an interesting analysis of the transaction.

Newton had a conversation with Shannon Sharp over Atlanta’s choice to give Kirk Cousins his enormous contract. Newton pointed out how unfair it was for Cousins to receive such a large payout following an accident but he did not receive the same amount of money in a comparable circumstance.

Furthermore, it appeared like the former quarterback implied the Falcons overpaid for Cousins.

Through the Club Shay Shay podcast, Newton stated, “What the Falcons paid Kirk Cousins, they could’ve got Cam Newton, Justin Fields, and Michael Vick, for that price.”

Newton did, however, slyly remark that Cousins could have earned even more had he accomplished what the former Panthers quarterback done.

“Kirk Cousins would have most likely received more if you had given him my resume.”Newton continued, “I’m just exposing the truth.”

Cam Newton received numerous honors while he was a member of the Panthers. He was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2011 and was selected to his first Pro Bowl. He had multiple more successful seasons and two more trips to the Pro Bowl after that.

But 2015 was undoubtedly the best run of his career. 35 touchdowns, a career high, and 3,837 yards were passed for by Newton. He thus earned his first and only MVP award as well as the All-Pro title. Though Newton was never able to win a Super Bowl, he will always be remembered as one of the greatest players in NFL history.

Was Newton right about Cousins? Was he merely being resentful? Whatever the case, the Falcons are enthusiastic about what the former Vikings quarterback can offer.

Kirk Cousins wants to contribute to the Falcons’ advancement.
One of the NFL’s most dependable and successful quarterbacks is Cousins. After being selected by the Washington Commanders in the fourth round of the 2012 Draft, he began playing for the team. He advanced gradually before taking a huge step forward in his fourth year.

Cousins accumulated 4,166 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2015. Afterwards, he was selected for his first Pro Bowl after throwing for a staggering 4,917 yards, a career high. The veteran quarterback posted five more seasons with 4,000 yards or more and three more Pro Bowl appearances to round off his impressive output.

Newton brought up Cousins’ injury problems from his final season with the Vikings, which limited him to just eight games. The 35-year-old just finished a 2023 campaign in which he gained 2,331 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Cousins is anticipated to continue to be among the league’s top quarterbacks upon his return. The Falcons are also waiting for him with their weaponry. The two players joining the team again following successful seasons are tight end Kyle Pitts and wide receiver Drake London.

In summary, Kirk Cousins was given a deal by the Falcons for a reason. In 2024 and beyond, he wants to contribute to helping the squad reach new heights.
