Aaron Judge speaks candidly about the Yankees’ pitching following a heartbreaking Mariners loss.

Even though the Yankees were defeated by the Mariners on Monday, Aaron Judge had all praise for the work that their pitching staff put in.

The New York Yankees’ 2024 bat lineup has generated a lot of excitement; in particular, the arrival of Juan Soto has performed even better than the Yankees had hoped. If only the Yankees’ bats were delivering, though, they would not have had such a stellar start to the 2024 season. Aaron Judge noted that the Yankees’ pitching staff is still impressive despite their 5-4 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Monday.

Before losing to the Mariners, the Yankees had won seven straight games, and Judge said he was impressed with the team’s recent pitching efforts. It was Marcus Stroman’s chance to make a spectacular pitch on Monday. With six strikeouts and just one walk in 7.1 innings of work, Stroman was a worker. He gave up just one earned run on three hits. The fact that they still lost is regrettable, but it shouldn’t take away from how fantastic the Yankees’ starting rotation has been playing lately.

We have those guys because of it. Judge told reporters, via SNY Yankees on Twitter (X), “It’s been amazing to watch them do their thing; after every start, they’re all trying to outdo each other.”

It is true that a team needs to work together to achieve such a remarkable start as the Yankees, who currently hold the second-best record in the Major League Baseball, with a 33-16 record. Although Clay Holmes gave up four runs in a terrible ninth inning on Monday, the Yankees’ starting rotation is more than holding up their half of the bargain. Still, the team will be hoping that the bullpen can get back on track.

Pitching staff of the Yankees, on a roll

The Yankees’ rotation has been extremely effective lately, and they haven’t just had a couple standout starts from their starters. Apart from Marcus Stroman’s impressive 7.1-inning outing against the Mariners, Carlos Rodon, Luis Gil, Nestor Cortes, and Clarke Schmidt have also performed admirably.

At the very least, Cortes and Rodon are likely to be held to a higher standard due to their successful track records. They have impressive pedigrees, having both been past All-Stars. However, there’s no assurance that you’ll get the best performance out of them in 2024. After all, they both had difficult, injury-plagued 2023 seasons. However, they have returned to health in 2024 and are a strong core member of the Yankees rotation that appears to be deepening. In the meantime, Stroman, the Yankees’ key winter acquisition, has largely delivered value for money.

To complete the rotation, the Yankees have added Gil and Schmidt, both of whom have exceeded expectations. Gil recently had a 14-strikeout performance, albeit it should be noted that it was against the unfortunate Chicago White Sox. Then, through the first nine games of the 2024 season, Schmidt has improved in every aspect following a mediocre season in which he started 32 games. Based on ERA, the Yankees’ pitching has been the best in the Major League Baseball to begin the season. For opposing teams, the possibility that this collection of outstanding pitchers could improve even further upon the return of their talisman might be unsettling.

All of this is happening in New York without Gerrit Cole.

When Gerrit Cole seemed to suffer a serious injury before the 2024 season began, there was a lot of worry about the Yankees’ pitching. It’s still uncertain when the 33-year-old ace Cole will return to the mound after suffering an elbow injury that has kept him out since April. (The good news is that he just made a significant advancement in his recuperation.) For the last ten years, Cole has been among the MLB’s finest starters, and in more recent times, he has also shown to be one of its greatest workhorses. Throughout his career, he has tossed more than 200 innings in a single season six times, the most recent being in 2023. He has always been of the highest caliber.

It’s amazing, though, that the Yankees will now have to discuss who Cole will replace in the starting rotation after his injury heals. Their rotation has been that strong, particularly lately. Will they use a six-man rotation to try to preserve the health of their players? Cole is not getting any younger, so when he returns, they’ll probably manage him carefully. Especially because all five of the players in their rotation right now are contributing to the team’s success.

They have exceeded everyone’s expectations by almost half of the way through the first 50 games of the season, which is impressive for a club that had many pitching questions at the start of the season. With plenty of room to grow, the Yankees are currently leading the AL East rankings.
