In Sunday’s USA Today 301, Logano took the green flag sixth, whereas Elliott had started from the pole. Before making contact with Elliott’s No. 9, Logano informed his No. 22 team over the radio that he felt as though something had broken in the right-front of the car and that it would not turn.

Elliott led the Cup Series with points going into the competition. Prior to the race, Logano held the 15th position in the standings, and in the preliminary playoff rankings, he was minus-6 points from the elimination bubble.
