Michael Owen: ‘Liverpool are good enough to win the Champions League, but they’re too inconsistent’

Michael Owen has raised concerns over Liverpool’s ability to mount a serious challenge in Europe this season, citing inconsistency as a potential stumbling block in the knockout stages.

Liverpool’s European pedigree remains intact despite their domestic struggles, but Owen believes their fluctuating form could prove costly when they face elite opposition in the latter rounds of competitions. The Reds are set to meet Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals, a tie that will test their credentials at the highest level.

Owen stressed that while Liverpool possess the quality to compete with any side, the margin for error in knockout football leaves little room for inconsistency.

“Do I think they can win the Champions League? I think their, their team are good enough, too, but I just think they’re too inconsistent,” Owen lamented.

“And one slip-up at this stage against really good teams and you’re out. So I’d have to say that I’d be nervous about Liverpool winning anything this season.

“They’ve obviously got a tough draw in the FA Cup as well. The only good thing going for Liverpool at the moment is that Chelsea are not performing that well and Villa are slipping a little bit and there’s going to be five teams you would think in the in the Champions League places,” Owen has stated.
