Galatasaray’s hardcore supporters, known as ultras, turned Liverpool into a dramatic spectacle despite being banned from attending tonight’s Champions League match at Anfield.
Hours before kickoff, large groups of Galatasaray ultras gathered around the team bus and city centre streets, chanting, waving flags and setting off red flares and fireworks.
The displays were intense enough to be heard and seen blocks away.
The ban comes after previous crowd trouble during Galatasaray’s match against Juventus, which included throwing objects and lighting fireworks.
UEFA fined the club €40,000 and prohibited them from selling away tickets for this tie to uphold safety standards.
Social media quickly filled with clips of the scenes, highlighting the irony – the ultras created a charged atmosphere outside Anfield because they’re barred from doing so inside.
